NON SPOILER: Divergent By Veronica Roth 5/5 Stars

Divergent Series

Set in a futuristic dystopian Chicago, the city is split not by religion or culture but personality traits called the 5 factions. Abnegation for the selfless, Amity for the peaceful, Candor for the truthful, Erudite for the intelligent and Dauntless for the brave. The story follows 16 year old Beatrice Prior as she has to make a choice either to leave her family behind or find where she belongs in society.  But as she ventures out she finds out secrets which threaten both her and those she loves.

Writing Style:

Veronica Roth uses a simple writing style which makes the book really easy to read and follow. The series is written in first person narrative from Beatrice’s perspective for the first two books and the final book in the trilogy is written in dual narrative from Beatrice and Four’s perspectives. The novella ‘Four’ is written in Four’s perspective and is set two years before Beatrice’s story. The trilogy has approximately 500 pages each but the book is very fast paced. You could even finish the book in a day.

Character Development:

Over the three books we definitely get to see Beatrice grow as a person from being uncertain as to what she wants in life to becoming willing to do anything for her loved ones. We see as a young confused girl attempting to make sense of life blossom into a grown and mature lady. We really relate to her as she grows throughout the books. Within the books ‘Allegiant’ and ‘Four’ we get a real insight and understanding to Four’s character. Veronica Roth really explores the characters deeply making them realistic and relatable.

Roth explores the main theme of identity. Beatrice is trying to fit into a limited society and figure out where she belongs. Roth also explores the limitations of society and class with the 5 factions.

Overall thoughts:

I absolutely love this series. Veronica Roth has done an amazing job with her debut novel series. It is shocking that she was so young when she wrote it. Divergent is so deep and meaningful yet full of action and adventure. It’s everything you could ask for in a book. I would recommend it to anyone and everyone. I can’t wait for more Veronica Roth books in the future.

I like this review! Have you read all of the books? I read all three of them and really hated the ending of Allegiant.
I really appreciated how you separated the different points, but the different colors were a little difficult to read. 🙂
