NON SPOILER: Beautiful Broken Things By Sara Barnard 5/5 Stars

PUBLISHING DETAILS: February 25th 2016 by Macmillan Children’s Books (UK)

PAGES: 322

STARS: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

NOTES: This is Sara Barnard’s Debut Novel. She is currently working on her second novel A Quiet Kind Of Thunder.

Set in Brighton, England, Beautiful Broken Things is a story that follows the friendship between 3 High School girls; Caddy, Rosie and Suzanne. What will happen to Caddy and Rosie’s friendship when new girl Suzanne moves in? This book is intense and will defo trigger all the feels.

Writing Style:

I loved the writing style for this book. Is split into three sections. Before, When and After. The book follows the whole school year of Year 11. The writing was simple and easy to follow. There were also parts in text message and email format which I always love in a book making it so much fun and enjoyable.

Character Development:

Throughout the novel we really see Caddy develop as a character she has just turned 16 and wants to be more noticed and popular like other girls. We see her discover the real important things in life throughout the novel and also as she comes out of her comfort zone to take risks.

Suzanne also develops in the novel as she learns to accept help and take control over her life.

The main theme would obviously be friendship. We see such strong bonds between the three girls. This book doesn’t have any romance which is nice for a change as it focuses on important aspects of teen life.

Mental health is also a major theme in the novel and Sara Barnard really addresses both themes amazingly

Overall thoughts:

I absolutely loved this novel. It was so simple and fun yet emotional at the same time. It is definitely different to other novels about coming of age out there. I feel Sara Barnard has definitely captured teenage life perfectly.

Top Quote:

“But people we love come and go, Caddy. That doesn’t mean we loved them any less at the time.”
Sara Barnard, Beautiful Broken Things

Nice review, Zainab! I’ve seen this book in real life, and the cover is absolutely stunning with the gold foil. I love books that focuses on friendships themes and this sounds like a fantastic one. I also haven’t read that many UKYA books so I’ll be a lookout on this one. ^.^
