SYNOPSIS:

Bad Bloods is a two-part dystopian novel that follows main characters Serena and Daniel. Both are bad bloods who possess special powers but they are seen as a threat the city of Vendona and upon exposure are executed. With the election coming up the fate of all the bad bloods is at risk…

WRITING STYLE:

The novel is written in dual narrative perspective of both Serena and Daniel in alternative chapters. This provides a deep insight into both of the main characters and I really enjoyed the style. The writing is quick paced and easy to understand.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT:

The dual narrative gives a chance for the 2 main characters Serena and Daniel to really develop. A lot of detail has been put into emotions and character development. We also see all the characters of the 2 flocks as realistic individuals. I love how Shannon has given each member of the flocks realistic personalities and has given real thought into each character giving them all individual powers.

THEMES:

Within the flocks we see a lot of responsibility and love/compassion between the members. We see them act as a family as they assure survival. Survival is a key part as the bad bloods must keep their identity hidden from the rest of the city. The novel also includes some fantasy with the powers of the bad bloods and each bad blood has individual powers making it rally unique.

OVERALL THOUGHTS:

I was in love with this novel right from the first page. It’s such a page turner and definitely a unique concept. I haven’t read anything like it so far. I love how fast paced and intense it is.

TOP QUOTE:

  • “Bad bloods aren’t born evil or dangerous. We are taught to be, but only because we have to if we want to survive.”
