Synopsis:

Set in the future of America now known as Panem, an annual reality style game show is held to punish the 12 poor districts for uprising against the ruling government of the Capitol. 1 girl and 1 boy between the ages of 12-18 are reaped into the games from each district to fight to the death. 24 tributes, 1 winner. Winning will make you famous. Losing means certain death.

When 16 year old Katniss Everdeen takes place and volunteers for her younger sister she sparks hope within the districts leading to grave consequences for her and her loved ones.

Writing Style:

The trilogy is written in first person narrative from Katniss’ perspective. Suzanne Collins’ writing style is extremely easy to follow and fast paced as it kept me turning pages. It reads really quickly immersing you full on into all the action.

Character Development:

Suzanne Collins’ doesn’t forget to develop realistic characters in the midst of all the plot. The trilogy if full of the character development of Katniss as she struggles to find her inner self amongst all the violence and threat of the capitol. We see her struggle emotionally but battle it out to become a powerful and strong female lead.

Themes:

Dystopian society is the main theme in the novel. We see a future America split into 12 poor districts each responsible for providing the rich Capitol with supplies e.g. district 12 specialises in coal mining.

Survival is a key, as with the games and the anger of the Capitol nobody is safe especially Katniss and her loved ones.

Overall thoughts:

I just love this trilogy. It holds a special place in my heart because it’s what really sparked my love of reading. I would recommend this to anyone really but especially if you’re looking to get into the YA age bracket of books. Thank you Suzanne Collins for writing this awesome trilogy, (I wish you would write more.)

The Hunger Games is my favourite! I wish Suzanne Collins would write short stories about each of the Victors we meet along the way so we can learn more about them. I would love to know more about Finnick and Annie! Loved this post! I feel like people don’t talk about THG anymore and it makes me sad so I was very happy to see this! 🙂
