Synopsis

Set in the year 2118 New York is all within The Thousandth Floor Tower. The richest live near the top and the poor towards the bottom. The story follows 5 teen characters in a web of lies and secrets. The prologue begins with a girl falling off the tower and then flashbacks 2 months earlier to everything leading up to her fall whilst you’re left guessing who was the one who died.  

Writing Style:

The book is written following 5 different characters in third person narrative It was easy to follow and consisted on about 5 pages per chapter with a different perspective in every chapter. 

Character Development:

There was a lot of character development in this book. I found myself getting very attached to all 5 of the main characters. I does seem like a lot of characters but you get attached really quick. We get to see all the characters develop as they go through difficulties in their lives. Katharine McGee definitely adds a quirky and unique style to each character allowing their voices to stand out.

Themes:

Sci-Fi/ Dystopia: This book is set about 100 years into the future and we get to see so much new and cool tech explored. It has a slight dystopia feel to it although it doesn’t have the main tropes of a dystopia novel. It doesn’t have the evil dictatorship government but there is a huge difference between the poor and rich. 

Mystery: There’s a huge mystery element in this book and I think that’s what drives the story mainly. There’s just so much drama that keeps you hooked all the time.

Mental Health: Mental health is an underlying theme explored through the character of Leda. We get to see her after rehab and how the effects of her drug addiction really mess with her mind. 

Overall Thoughts:

This was a really different type of book genre for me but I loved it. Katharine McGee has done really well for her debut. Can’t wait for the rest of the trilogy.
