SYNOPSIS:
‘Tonight The Streets Are Ours’ follows Arden who is always been labelled as recklessly loyal. She is always there to support her loved ones in times of need but doesn’t seem to be getting any appreciation or love back. One night when Arden’s limits are crossed she and her best friend Lindsey go on a wild road trip to New York in search of a blogger Peter who’s blog Tonight The Streets Are Ours really captures Arden and her feelings, but when she meets Peter things aren’t quite as they seemed online.
WRITING STYLE:
Leila Sales writes this novel in third person perspective. It switched from present to past tense between chapters allowing you to get and a deeper understanding of the characters and the plot. This style was definitely different but really fun and enjoyable. The epilogue is written in first person perspective from Arden herself, as she talks about her future a while after the events in the book. The writing was really fun quirky and easy to follow yet deep and meaningful.
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT:
Character development plays a huge role in this novel. We really get to see Arden realise that the world isn’t perfect and not everybody is as loving as herself. She not only recognises this but allows herself to let loose a little on taking responsibility of people lives she is able to learn the true meaning of happiness.
THEMES:
I think this novel is mainly a coming of age novel as Arden explores the real world and also realises where her priorities really lie in life.
Also I think friendship in embedded nicely with the novel. I really did love Lindsey and Arden’s unbreakable friendship.
Romance doesn’t essentially play a huge part within the novel although the book starts with: “Like all stories, the one you are about to read is a love story. If it wasn’t, what would be the point?” I think love is explored but not necessarily romantic love but love for the people around you and the world in general.
OVERALL THOUGHTS:
Tonight The Streets Are Ours is a lovely heart-warming read. I absolutely didn’t expect the ending to end how it did but looking back I think it was perfect. It really shows how people you may consider as insignificant can have a huge impact on your life. I would really recommend this book to anyone looking a nice sweet story about general teenage life.

I absolutely love books that focus on friendship and it’s been such a long time since I’ve read a well done coming of age story. So glad to hear this one was a lovely as the cover! I actually own a copy of this so it’s just a matter of picking it up now. ^.^

I also have a non spoiler review of Beautiful Broken Things by Sara Barnard which solely focuses of teenage friendship between 3 girls. Its a beautiful read. I would highly recommended it too…

This book sounds incredibly fascinating. I had seen it around but never really knew what it was about until now. I’m always a little wary of YA contemporaries: unless they are thrillers, they usually don’t pique my interest. But this sounds like a perfect fun, entertaining, cohesive story.
